Mr. Kelvin Miller studied martial arts for over 30 years, earning black belts in Chung Do Kwan and Chang Moo Kwan (4th degree), as well as a red belt in Moo Duk Kwan. He also has a second degree black belt in Combat Hapkido. His ranks were received under the instruction of Master E. H. Williford and Grandmaster John Pellegrini. He taught and competed in point fighting, and now teaches Olympic -style sparring. Students from Olympic Tae Kwon Do Academy have won in competitions across the nation. In 1995, a 12 year-old student won at the Virginia State Games, qualifying him for prestigious State Championship. Upon winning there, he went on to the Virginia Tae Kwon Do team in national competition. Similar successes continue to occur under Kelvin’s teaching. In 1999, a 14 year-old student won in the N.C. State Championship, qualifying him to compete in another nationwide competition – the 1999 Junior Olympic Competition in Las Vegas, where he also won. Kelvin began his teaching career in the basement of a Church. His passion for children and young people and his giftedness in martial arts let him to teach for five years – free of charge – in an effort to help get kids off the streets. He encourages them to make the best of their lives, stressing education and freedom from substance use. In fact, the academy T-shirt worn by so many of the students say it all:I’m not street I’m drug free, And education is the key!
In 2000, Kelvin was inducted in the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He works exceptionally well with all ages. He has a loyal staff of black belts that assist during the classes. His patience, friendliness, and understanding, along with his detail to technique make him a powerful example to all. He takes the “Do” part of Tae Kwon Do very seriously: It’s a way of life!
